Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Regency convex mirrors are circular mirrors featuring curved glass that reflects an entire room. They were traditionally adorned with carved giltwood frames, spherical ball ornaments, and decorative crestings such as eagles or foliage.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, finished with plaster or gesso, and coated in gold leaf. The mirror plates were made using water-gilded convex glass set within an ebonised inner slip.

Authentic Regency mirrors display signs of hand-carving on the reverse timber frame, natural oxidisation to the gold leaf, and distortion or faint foxing in the original convex glass. The presence of ebonised reeding or ball detailing along the moulding also indicates traditional period craftsmanship.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece or sideboard to create a focal point and amplify natural light. Its sculptural form and gold leaf finish provide contrast against contemporary walls or complement traditional dark timber panelling.

Dust the carved frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water that can damage water-gilded surfaces. Clean the glass carefully with a dry lint-free cloth or a cleaner applied directly to the cloth rather than the frame.
