Marble and Alabaster Bust of a Lady, Early 20th Century, by Gustave Van Vaerenbergh

1900 - 1920
Description

A refined and beautifully executed bust depicting a young woman wearing a draped garment and headscarf. The sculpture masterfully combines smooth white marble for the face and neck with richly veined lilac and cream alabaster for the clothing and head covering, creating a striking contrast in colour and texture. The artist’s delicate handling of expression and form showcases the grace and serenity typical of Van Vaerenbergh’s work.

The bust rests on an integral alabaster base and is presented in very good condition, with only minor wear consistent with age. An elegant and timeless example of Belgian Art Nouveau sculpture, ideal for display in both classic and contemporary interiors.

Signed by the artist Gustave Van Vaerenbergh, (Belgian, 1873–1927)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau stone busts feature stylized organic forms, elegant contorted draping, and idealized human features. Sculptors frequently combined distinct stone varieties, such as white alabaster for skin and variegated marble for clothing, to create tone and texture contrast.

Craftsmen hand-carved separate elements from raw stone blocks using chisels and rasps. The translucent alabaster head and neck were fitted onto a contrasting marble torso or pedestal, held together with internal metal pins or structural mortar.

Authentic stone sculptures maintain a natural coldness to the touch and exhibit varying degrees of translucency when exposed to light. Genuine pieces frequently show hand-tool markings beneath polished surfaces and may bear incised sculptor signatures near the rear base.

A stone bust functions as a focal point when positioned on a dark wooden mantelpiece, modern console table, or architectural pedestal. Combining the classical sculpture with clean contemporary lines or minimalist backdrops accentuates its silhouette.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth or soft-bristled brush. Because alabaster is porous and soluble, avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, and acidic solutions; specialized stone conservation wax can be applied sparingly to protect the surface.
