Khamseh Rug

19th century
Description

A very fine example of an antique Khamseh rug in very good condition. Two diamonds filled with a random assortment of motifs float over a striped background. The diamonds are quite wonky and obscure the stripes in a way that creates great depth. I often talk about depth caused by these optical illusions and I think this demonstrates it better than any I have seen. The wool is silky soft, the colours saturated and vibrant, altogether a wonderfully beautiful piece.

Very good condition. The pile in the centre is more worn than the borders but still very acceptable.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Khamseh rug is a traditional hand-knotted textile woven by the nomadic tribes of the Khamseh Confederation in southwest Persia. These carpets are renowned for their geometric designs, rich red and indigo colour palettes, and stylized bird or animal motifs.

Khamseh rugs are constructed almost entirely from wool, utilizing spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation. Natural plant and mineral dyes are historically used to achieve saturated red, deep blue, terracotta, and ivory tones.

Authentic pieces feature a wool foundation, a soft and pliable handle, and distinct design motifs such as vertical stripes, double or triple diamond medallions, and small geometric animal figures. The weave is typical of South Persian nomadic craft, often exhibiting slight asymmetrical irregularities.

A Persian tribal rug brings warmth and texture to modern spaces when layered over neutral floorings, such as oak boards or polished concrete. Its rich colours and geometric patterns complement both traditional dark wood furniture and minimalist contemporary silhouettes.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting to avoid damaging the hand-knotted pile. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and neutral wool detergent, and turn the rug periodically to ensure even wear and light exposure.
