Turkoman Yomut Main Carpet

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This Antique Yomut "Main Carpet" is a Central Asian weaving, distinguished by its impressive scale and the rhythmic repetition of the iconic kepse Gul. Woven late 19th century the rug features a deep, multi-tonal mahogany field that showcases the "winged" diamond emblems in alternating diagonal rows of indigo, and ivory—a sophisticated use of natural madder and vegetable dyes. Its grand dimensions (345cm x 210cm) and intact long elem (end panels) with serrated tree motifs mark it as a rare survivor of the nomadic lifestyle, intended to serve as the heart of a prosperous family's home. While the low pile and honest patina reflect over a century of history, they only serve to enhance the rug’s appeal, offering a grounded, historical depth that makes it a singular focal point for a large interior space. Blanket soft to handle.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Yomut main carpets are large hand-knotted textiles created by the Yomut group, one of the primary Turkmen nomadic tribes of Central Asia. They typically feature a dark red or aubergine ground decorated with repeating geometric tribal emblems called gols, enclosed by complex geometric borders.

These carpets are constructed entirely from hand-spun wool, including the pile, warp, and weft threads. The pile is hand-knotted using symmetrical or asymmetrical knots, coloured with natural dyes derived from plant extracts and minerals.

Identification relies on examining the structural weave, dye quality, and motif design. Traditional pieces feature dark red or aubergine wool foundations, characteristic diamond-shaped Yomut gols, and subtle variations typical of nomadic loom work.

A deeply toned tribal carpet anchors minimalist, contemporary, or traditional living spaces by introducing rich colour and intricate texture. Placing it beneath neutral modern furniture creates contrast between clean architectural lines and historic geometric patterns.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only attachment without a rotating beater bar to prevent fibre damage. Professional cleaning should be undertaken by a specialist restorer, and the carpet should be rotated periodically to ensure even wear.
