Antique Qashqai Khamseh Rug. 245cm X 158cm.

Description

Last quarter 19th century.

Sometimes hard to distinguish the difference between these two tribes the qashqai and the khamseh.

This carpet has elements of both tribes the central design emblems belonging to the qashqai and the diamond sides and diagonal corner spandrels design belonging to the khamseh !

Still a lovely big interior design decorators carpet,soft coloured palette with three central joined pointed diamond medallions each with the tribal qashqai emblem inside each.

The light blue ground colour filled with tribal motifs including tree of life,rosettes,peacocks,deer or gazelle,simply stunning.

Notice to within the ivory ground main border are a pair of deer motifs with candy stripe legs.

Hand washed & de-dusted,last images.

All over even low pile as you would expect from a tribal carpet of this age. All ends and sides secured.

Size is 8 foot by 5 foot 2 inches. 245cm X 158cm. At widest points. Fringes not measured in size. All woollen construction.

Qashqai and Khamseh rugs originate from nomadic confederations in southwestern Iran. They are characterized by geometric layouts, multiple borders, central diamond medallions, and small zoomorphic or floral figures woven from memory without formal cartoons.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation. Natural vegetable and plant-based dyes were traditionally used to create the saturated reds, indigo blues, and ochre shades.
