Early Antique Khamseh Tribal Carpet. Arab-jabbareh Tribe. Shekarlu Border. 305cm X 183cm.

19th century
Description

South west persia. By the arab-jabbareh tribe of the khamseh confederation.

Third quarter 19th century,circa 1870.

Quite an early carpet size weaving with an interesting main border pattern of this tribes interpretation of a shekarlu pattern the type seen in qashqai weavings.

Indigo blue field colour full of tribal symbology and motifs. The colours are varied and soft. A most beautiful weaving getting harder to source earlier examples especially of this size.

As you would expect from a carpet of good age there has been two repairs one to each end. Done very competently and tidy. Both imaged.

Low even pile with a small amount of wear to one end.

All sides and ends secured. Hand washed and de-dusted.

Carpet priced accordingly. Plenty of images.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Khamseh carpets originate from a tribal confederation in Fars province in southwestern Iran. They are characterised by intricate geometric patterns, central diamond medallions, and motifs depicting stylised flora and fauna woven from memory rather than drawn cartoons.

These carpets are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft. The yarns are coloured using plant and mineral dyes, producing saturated hues of navy blue, terracotta red, ochre, and ivory.

Authentic pieces display slight irregularities in weave density, asymmetry in design motifs, and natural abrash colour variations within the wool. Examination of the reverse side reveals clear hand-tied knots and flexible, hand-bound selvedges.

A geometric tribal carpet anchors minimalist, traditional, or eclectic room schemes by introducing pattern and visual weight. Placing the rug beneath neutral-toned contemporary furniture allows the rich colour palette and geometric borders to serve as the focal point.

Regular maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush bar to protect the wool fibers. Professional dry rug cleaning and prompt spot cleaning with cold water and pH-neutral soap ensure the long-term preservation of natural dyes.
