Superb Japanese Meiji (Early 20thc) Copper Jizai (Articulated) Spiny Lobster, Myochin

1900 - 1920
Description

Rare Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) copper spiny lobster sculpture (okimono), with articulated jizai (hinged) legs, body and antennae. Signed underneath Myochin. Scale model is accurately portrayed with all the anatomical characteristics of a real spiny lobster. Measures ca 38cm wide with antennae (body ca 18cm) x 10cm deep x 7cm high, weight 150g (with wooden box).

Excellent condition and patina – no damage or repairs.

Articulated Okinomo like this lobster were crafted and used as examples by highly skilled metal artisans to demonstrate their arms and armour making capabilities to prospective Daimyo and Samurai clients. From the 17th century, the production of articulated (jizai) models began in the relatively peaceful Edo era (1600-1868) in Japan. During this period the master metal craftsmen – notably the Myochin family – who made the samurai armour turned to the production of these collectors’ items. Articulated works of art typically represent crustaceans and insects, but also birds, fish, snakes and mythical animals such as dragons.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
