This rare Italian antique fountain head takes the form of a finely detailed crouching frog, cast in bronze — a medium renowned for strength, beauty, and the ability to develop a rich patina over time. Dating to circa 1920, it once served as a garden water spout: water would have flowed from the central opening in the frog’s mouth, uniting form and function.

More than utilitarian, it is a sculptural celebration of nature, symbolising renewal and transformation. Its lifelike posture and expressive modelling capture movement and alertness, making it equally captivating whether dry or in use.

Composition & Technique

Form: Realistically modelled frog, crouched with muscular limbs and carefully defined textures, reflecting the naturalistic Italian sculptural tradition.

Style: Classical European realism with Victorian influence.

Colour & Patina: Rich, dark brown bronze with green and earthy highlights from natural oxidation. Areas of verdigris enhance its aged authenticity.

About the Sculptor – After Raffaello Romanelli

Although unsigned, this work is stylistically attributed after Raffaello Romanelli (1856–1928), the celebrated Italian sculptor noted for his realistic bronzes and garden statuary. His workshop blurred the line between fine art and functional design, a philosophy evident in this fountain head, where utility and sculptural beauty are seamlessly combined.
