Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Doulton Lambeth salt glaze puzzle jug originates from England around 1900 in the Victorian style. The stoneware vessel displays a warm brown salt glaze finish with incised decoration and dark brown tones across the handle and top rim. Visible details include a pierced neck with tiny circular cutouts, three horizontal tubular spouts protruding from the rim, a looped handle on the right side, and a decorative applied collar band around the shoulder of the bulbous body. Relief-moulded lettering runs diagonally across the front with a drinking rhyme, and simple zig-zag mouldings accent the lower base. The jug measures 17.5 cm high. Display this piece on a sideboard top in an English country house interior as a decorative tabletop accessory or conversation piece.

FAQs

A puzzle jug is an interactive ceramic drinking vessel popular in 18th and 19th-century Europe, designed with hidden liquid channels, pierced necks, and multiple spouts to challenge drinkers to consume the liquid without spilling.

These vessels were crafted from dense stoneware clay, featuring a hollow handle connected to a tubular rim with concealed spouts, fired with common salt thrown into the kiln to produce a characteristic pitted glaze.

Authentic pieces typically feature impressed factory marks or artist monograms on the base, incised rhyming inscriptions on the body, pierced neckwork, and a distinctive two-tone buff and brown salt glaze.

An antique puzzle jug functions as a decorative conversation piece when displayed on an open bookshelf, sideboard top, or rustic dresser alongside other historic ceramics.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads that could damage surface glazes or internal capillary tubes.
