Early 20th Century Hand Carved Fairground Dragon Ride Fragment

1900 - 1920
Description

Rare Early 20th Century Hand Carved Fairground Dragon Ride Fragment

A highly decorative and delightful object of an early 20th Century fairground dragon ride fragment panel. Would likely have been accompanied by numerous other figures of a similar nature and illuminated to decorate an old fairground ride. This figure is made from section pieces of hand carved pine wood and hand painted with layers of old paint underneath as shown. With one red glass eye still in place, its likely a light bulb would have been placed behind the dugout wood behind. The dragon is carved to what resembles a tree branch which is firmly in place, this would have made up the rest of the ride’s décor. This figure is mounted to a bespoke metal display but can be removed if you wish to display it on the wall.

Size in inches: H 15” x W 46” x D 6”

Origin: Unknown

Date: Early 20th Century

Condition: Fair

A solid object with lots of surface wear and missing detail. The reverse photos show the jointed pieces and the dug-out area. Old screw or nail holes are present also. These fairground items were always over painted over time, and this also shows its layers of paint across the surface. This is a flat object that can be mounted to the wall if needed.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fairground art encompasses decorative hand-carved and painted figures, panels, and ornaments created for travelling carnivals, carousels, and amusement rides during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These figures were predominantly hand-carved from durable hardwoods such as pine or oak, constructed using laminated wooden blocks for strength, and finished with weather-resistant paint.

Authentic pieces display visible hand-carving tool marks, layered paint histories showing exposure to the elements, structural jointing lines, and mounting point hardware.

Displaying a sculptural fairground fragment mounted on a plain wall or placed on top of a cabinet adds texture, historic narrative, and visual intrigue to contemporary spaces.

Position the item in a stable environment away from direct heat and sunlight, dusting gentle with a dry soft brush to protect the historic paint surface.
