Welsh Pine Settle Bench With Original Painted Finish, West Wales, Circa 1790

£2,200    $2,969    €2,569
Wonderful Welsh settle in superb untouched condition, with a tall panelled back with a canopy top and elaborately-shaped sides, above a lift-up seat revealing two compartments, over a panelled base. It has a fully panelled reverse and would have served as not only a seat and chest but also a room divider, providing a draught-free area in front of the hearth..

The mustard coloured panels contrast with the brown framework and sides and the finish is beautifully worn from generations of everyday use. The paint is crazed and bubbled in places. The underside of the seat has graffiti from previous owners.

A sturdy piece and comfortable - inasmuch as settles can ever be considered comfortable by modern standards!

I have handled hundreds of settles from this area in my 55 years of dealing and collecting, and this is certainly one of the best and most appealing I''ve encountered.
