Description

Art Nouveau patinated bronze figure Flora by the renowned Swiss Sculptor Alfred Jean Foretay. The seated figure is adorned with flowers and blooms. Flora is the Roman Goddess of Flowers. She is associated with the coming of Spring and the fertility of the land. She also symbolises love, beauty and abundance. A finely detailed figure and an excellent example. Signed to the bronze A Foretay. French c 1900 . Excellent original condition

History

Alfred Jean Foretay, Swiss sculptor and painter born in Morges in 1861 and died in Geneva in 1944. This bronze with brown patina is typical of the Art Nouveau style and measures 34 cm high He studied first in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in the sculpture section at Alexandre Falguière and then exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris At the end of his life he produced works for the Municipality of Geneva where he died
