Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide architectural mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a hearth or mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces feature decorative moulded frames designed to anchor the visual centre of a reception room.

19th-century overmantel mirrors were constructed using softwood or hardwood frames adorned with moulded gesso ornamentation. Gold leaf was applied over a clay bole ground, while original mirror glass was backed with silvered or mercury reflective coatings.

Authentic period examples display subtle age-related crazing in the gesso, natural wear on the gold leaf exposing the reddish or dark clay bole underneath, and heavy pine backboards secured with early hand-turned screws or nails.

A gilt overmantel mirror can be mounted above a fireplace surround, suspended above a modern dining sideboard, or layered against a dark painted wall to create high visual contrast and maximise natural light reflection.

Clean delicate gesso and gilding by dusting lightly with a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners on the gilded surface. Apply glass cleaning solution directly to a microfiber cloth rather than the mirror plate to avoid damaging edge seals.
