Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian overmantel mirror is designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, serving as a focal point in formal reception rooms. These mirrors typically feature arched tops, gilded wood and gesso frames, and classical decorative details such as beaded borders or leaf motifs.

19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed using pine or lime wood bases layered with gesso, a composition of plaster and glue. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, surrounding thick plate glass.

Authentic period pieces often show natural wear to the gilded finish, revealing red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf. The backboards are typically made of dark, hand-sawn wood planks, and the mirror plate may exhibit light oxidisation or foxing.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast, mantlepiece, or substantial console table to maximize room proportions and reflect light. Pair with contemporary lighting or understated mantle decor to contrast period moulding with modern lines.

Dust giltwood frames gently with a soft, dry feather duster or dry brush, avoiding liquids and commercial cleaning agents which can dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the glass carefully using a microfiber cloth dampened with water, keeping moisture away from the frame.
