Description

A super late 18thc /e 19thc stoneware jug measuring 28cms h and 26cms w. It is perfect i.e no cracks or restorations but it has wear on the royal coat of arms and a few minor chips.

I have consulted the "bible" english brown stoneware 1670-1900 without finding anything comparable. No markings of any type to aid comparisions. Added to that it has a large "patent" raised on its front.

A rarity without doubt

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Stoneware jugs were widely produced from the 17th to the 19th centuries for storing and transporting liquids such as beer, cider, water, and molasses, valued for their impermeability and durability.

These vessels were typically thrown on a potters wheel using dense, vitrified clay, often finished with salt glazes or slip coatings, and fired at high temperatures to ensure watertightness.

Authentic pieces exhibit historical manufacturing characteristics such as hand-thrown wheel ridges, subtle asymmetries, kiln ash marks, crazing in the glaze, and wear patterns consistent with age and practical use.

They make striking decorative accents when displayed alone on a mantelpiece, used as a floor vase for dried botanicals, or grouped with other earthenware on open shelving to add rustic texture.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid submerging porous antique ceramics in water or using harsh chemical cleaners to protect the integrity of the historic glaze.
