Occasional tables gained popularity in European interiors during the 18th and 19th centuries as versatile pieces used for various light functions like serving tea or holding lamps, often combining fine hardwoods with metal mounts.

Authentic period occasional tables typically feature solid timbers such as mahogany or walnut for the top and shelf surfaces, combined with cast or extruded brass for structural supports, trims, and legs.

Authenticity is determined by examining joint construction methods, the natural oxidisation of the brass components, grain patterns in the timber, and overall weight and manufacturing techniques consistent with historical periods.

These versatile items function well flanking a sofa as lamp tables, serving as bedside stands, or placed in empty corners to display decorative objects while adding warmth and textural contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and using specialised non-abrasive cleaners on the brass elements to preserve the metal surface.
