FAQs

A Chinese stone seal, often referred to as a chop, is a carved stamp used historically by scholars, officials, and artists to sign official documents, paintings, and calligraphy works.

These seals are traditionally carved from various soft stones, most notably soapstone, Shoushan stone, Qingtian stone, and occasionally jade or other dense minerals chosen for their fine texture and carving qualities.

Authenticity is assessed by examining tool marks, the quality of the stone, the style of the carving and script, natural weathering, and signs of historical wear on both the finial and the base.

These pieces function well as sculptural objects of curiosity and can be displayed on a bookshelf, desk, or mantelpiece alongside books and ceramics to add textural contrast and cultural depth.

Preservation involves keeping the stone away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, gently dusting with a soft, dry cloth, and avoiding chemical cleaners.
