Japanese Antique (1919) Taisho Bronze Okimono of Two Turtles, Style of Murata Seimin

1900 - 1920
Description

Japanese antique Taisho (1919) bronze okimono of two turtles, in the style of Murata Seimin (1781-1837). It is inscribed with the words ‘Taisho, 12th October 1919’ and signed Amamiya Shoun with a foundry mark. Large turtle measures 44cm long x 21cm deep x 12cm high, smaller 32cm x 18cm x 10cm, weight 8.15kg and 3.75kg respectively (total 11.9kg).

Excellent condition and patina. Would make a wonderful garden ornament.

Murata Seimin I was the first of a long line of bronze craftsmen who specialized in precise bronze sculpting using the lost-wax method. Much of his work was of Buddhist subjects, such as the casting of 500 arhats (disciples of the Buddha) at Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura. His other work included vases and ornaments, and he was famed for his studies of turtles/tortoises.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
