A rare and very fine quality Japanese Meiji period BRONZE BULL in lovely original condition. This handsome and substantial bronze is beautifully modelled and cast, with particular attention paid to the every detail. The colour and patina is excellent as he stands ‘four-square’ perhaps surveying his adoring herd of cows? Detailed signature underneath (see image). Heavy (solid bronze) and of good large size: 25cms long; 16cms high and 10cms deep. (10 x 6.5 x 4ins). Japanese, circa 1870-90.
** The Meiji period extended from 1868 to 1912, during which the Samurai sword was banned, except for ceremonial purposes. As a result, Japan’s exceptional and talented swords craftsmen were thrown out of work. Some families used their centuries of extensive experience in metalwork to produce wonderful Objet’s d’Arts, particularly in bronze, which are highly sought-after today.
