Jules MOIGNIEZ (1835-1894) was a noted sculptor of the French ‘animalier’ movement famous for his finely observed animals and birds. He frequently exhibited at the Paris Salon where he won numerous medals for his work. (The NORTHERN LAPWING, also known as the peewit; green plover or just lapwing, is common throughout much of Europe and Russia. It is highly migratory, known for its distinctive crest; its vocal “pee-wit” call; its tumbling flight to attract a mate and its habit of deterring predators away from its nest by falling to the ground trailing a wing, as if broken.)
