FAQs

A provincial settle is a traditional wooden bench crafted in rural regions during the 18th century, featuring a high panelled back to block cold draughts and often incorporating built-in storage beneath the seat.

These settles were predominantly constructed using locally sourced hardwoods such as elm or oak, assembled with hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, peg fastenings, and hand-planed panels.

Authentic period settles display hand-hewn tool marks, uneven timber shrinkage around wooden dowels, historical wear along the armrests and base, and original iron hinges or lock plates.

A panelled settle functions well in entryways, hallway spaces, or dining areas, complemented by tailored seat cushions or neutral wool throws to balance the structured timber aesthetic.

Preservation requires regular dusting with a soft cloth and periodic applications of clear beeswax paste to protect the wood finish and maintain humidity stability away from direct heat sources.
