Description

Good quality decorative pair of late 19th century patinated bronzes of two bacchinalian dancers from the procession of Dioysus the Greco-Roman god of the grape harvest and wine. Both wearing animal skins, one holds a quaich and amphora symbolising wine and merryment whilst the other holds castanets to symbolise music and dancing. Presented on green marbre vert socle bases with a continous frieze of a bacchaic procession. Well cast with a rich dark brown patination. Original small casting fracture to ankle. France, circa 1890.
