FAQs

Hanging shelves and wall racks have been utilised since the 17th century and earlier to store and display ceramics, pewter, and books in homes with limited floor space. They evolved through various stylistic periods, reflecting the craftsmanship and interior design trends of their respective eras.

Traditional pieces were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, pine, or walnut, joined using period techniques like dovetailing and pegged mortise and tenon joints. Many featured decorative elements such as shaped friezes, turned spindles, or leather edging secured with brass tacks.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping or cracking. Surfaces should be cleaned with a dry microfiber cloth, occasionally treated with quality beeswax, avoiding modern chemical polishes.

These shelves provide practical vertical storage and display space for books, ceramics, and plants in contemporary living rooms, kitchens, or hallways. Their traditional texture and dark wood tones contrast effectively against neutral or painted walls.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age-appropriate wear, hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, and original fixings or hanging brackets. Examination of the wood grain, patina, and underside construction helps differentiate genuine period items from modern reproductions.
