Japanese Meiji (19thC) Bronze Okimono of a Shojo by Ryomin. The drunken spirit is depicted seated, wearing loose robes and with her long hair flowing behind her back, looking down at her sake cup. Signed with a three-character signature on the base reading Ryomin saku (made by Ryomin). Measures ca 20cm wide x 15cm deep x 20cm high. Weight 2.35kg.
 
Excellent original condition with nice patina.
 
A Shojo is a Japanese sea spirit with similarities to a ghost but differing from the latter in the fact that Shojo are tangible. It enjoys drinking alcohol, especially sake. Legend has it that workers at breweries in Japan have seen Shojo lurking about after indulging in their products. (Sake is revered by immortals for its immortality-granting powers.)
