Japanese Edo (mid-19thC) boxwood netsuke of a shishi guarding a sacred ball in a cage. Asakusa school, signed Sato Masayoshi (1819-1865). Masayoshi and his followers made a number of netsuke depicting shishi, either singly or in groups. Measures 2.7cm high x 4cm long x 3cm deep.
 
Excellent condition and lovely patina.
