Japanese Edo (18thC) boxwood sashi netsuke of a Chokwaro Sennin with gourd and staff. The Sennin (Chinese sage) is wearing a monk’s robe and a leaf cape and skirt, looking straight ahead and leaning on his staff, supporting a double gourd on his left shoulder. A Chokwaro sennin could summon a magic horse from his gourd to be transported wherever he wanted. Strong early piece with exceptional carving of his characterful face and excellent detailing throughout, particularly his robe lines and the leaf cape texture. Height 10.5cm, width 3cm, depth 3cm
