Majolica is a type of pottery glazed with a tin-opaque glaze, traditionally featuring colourful designs over a white background. It gained widespread popularity during the 19th century, particularly showcased at international exhibitions where vibrant glazes and moulded reliefs were celebrated.

Majolica items are crafted from earthenware clay, shaped either by throwing on a potters wheel or using press moulds. They are then coated with a tin enamel glaze and fired at high temperatures before applying hand-painted metallic oxide pigments.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit crazing in the glaze, weight consistent with earthenware, hand-painted brushwork rather than printed decals, and occasional makers marks or registration numbers impressed into the base.

To preserve antique ceramics, hand wash them gently using mild soap and tepid water, avoiding harsh abrasives and soaking. Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the coloured glazes.

This piece can be styled as a striking focal point on a mantelpiece, open shelving unit, or sideboard, contrasting cleanly against neutral backgrounds to highlight its intricate glaze and form.
