The portrayal of the Virgin descending from Heaven to Earth, standing upon a crescent moon, surrounded by angels and with her hands extended or held together in front of her was a popular theme in painting and wooden sculpture in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Baroque religious sculptures were produced extensively in Southern Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries to inspire devotion in churches and private chapels, often characterised by dynamic movement and rich surface decoration.

These figures were typically carved from local softwoods like pine, then coated with a layer of gesso before being painted, gilded with gold leaf, and decorated using techniques such as estofado.

Authenticity is determined by examining the ageing of the underlying wood, the composition of the gesso and paint layers, hand-carving tool marks, and natural wear patterns consistent with centuries of handling and environmental exposure.

Placing the sculpture on a minimalist mantelpiece or within a neutral bookshelf allows its historical texture, polychrome paint, and gilding to serve as a sophisticated focal point.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room temperatures and relative humidity, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid cleaners.
