Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian giltwood display shelves and etageres were popularised in the 19th century as open multi-tiered furniture designed to exhibit ceramics, glassware, and curios. Characterised by elaborate wood carvings layered with gesso and gold leaf, these pieces frequently incorporated mirrored back panels to reflect ambient light and enhance the presentation of displayed objects.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved softwood or hardwood substrates, coated with layers of gesso (a mixture of plaster and glue), and finished using water or oil gilding with gold leaf. Shelves and backing panels frequently utilized silvered glass mirror plates and cut glass surfaces.

Authentic period pieces display characteristic signs of age, such as natural craquelure in the gesso layer, subtle wear revealing red or grey clay bole under the gilding, and hand-carved joinery underneath. Original mirror glass often exhibits slight foxing or oxidisation, unlike modern uniform silvering.

Position the shelf unit against a matte neutral or dark painted wall to create visual contrast with the metallic gilding. Modern interior designers layer tiered shelves with structured contemporary art books, monochrome ceramics, or sculptural objects to balance the historical ornamentation.

Dust giltwood gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or commercial liquid polishes which dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Glass shelves and mirrors should be wiped cautiously with a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring liquid does not seep into the gilt frames or substrate.
