How do I date a wooden clothes cupboard?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, construction methods, and stylistic details such as bracket feet or cornice mouldings. Georgian pieces often display fine mahogany veneers and hand-cut dovetails, whereas Edwardian versions favour satinwood or lighter oak frames. Hardware and internal fittings also offer clues to the period. Hand-forged hinges give way to machine-made brassware by the Victorian era, and mirrored doors become common towards the end of the nineteenth century.

Will a large antique wardrobe fit in a modern bedroom?

Many antique wardrobes were constructed on a grand scale to suit high-ceilinged period rooms. Checking the overall height, width, and depth dimensions against your space is essential before purchase. Several listings feature knockdown wardrobes designed to dismantle into manageable sections for transport and assembly. This traditional construction method makes moving large pieces through tight stairwells and doorways achievable.

How should I care for a mahogany or walnut cupboard?

Keep wooden furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the timber and veneers from drying out or fading. Maintain a stable room temperature to protect the antique polish and joints. Apply a traditional beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the grain and preserve the surface sheen. Avoid silicone-based sprays, which can penetrate the timber and damage the antique finish over time.
