Where should I hang a large overmantle mirror?

These mirrors traditionally anchor the space directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, reflecting light and surrounding furniture. Their substantial scale also suits placement along primary hallway walls or grand reception rooms. Ensure the supporting wall structure can bear the considerable weight of a timber and gesso frame. Professional wall fixings distributed across multiple points provide the necessary security for heavy antique specimens.

How do I identify a nineteenth-century painted mirror?

nineteenth-century pieces typically display heavy carved wooden frames coated in layered gesso and historic paint finishes. Closer inspection often reveals subtle craquelure, natural wear, and hand-applied parcel-gilt highlights. Period mirrors frequently house original or early mirror glass showing characteristic oxidation spots and minor imperfections. Examining the reverse side reveals aged timber construction and traditional joining methods consistent with the era.

How should I clean a painted and gilt frame?

Dust the carved wooden and gesso surfaces gently using a soft, dry brush to prevent accumulating dirt in the crevices. Avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths that might damage aged paint or delicate gold leaf. Glass panels require a minimal amount of glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the surface. This prevents moisture from seeping behind the frame and harming the historical wooden backing.
