How are antique commodes different from standard chests of drawers?

Antique commodes generally originate from continental traditions, particularly French and Dutch workshops, and often feature more decorative serpentine fronts and painted surfaces than traditional British chests. They serve similar storage functions in bedrooms and living spaces but tend to emphasise ornamental design alongside practical utility.

Where were banks of drapers drawers originally used?

Banks of drapers drawers and chemist shop fittings were built for commercial retail environments to sort and store dry goods, fabrics, or apothecary items efficiently. Their numerous small drawers made them ideal for organising inventory before finding a second life in domestic interiors.

How do you distinguish eighteenth-century styles on painted furniture?

Eighteenth-century pieces, such as those influenced by Louis XV or Dutch neoclassical design, rely on flowing curves, carved woodwork, and specific proportions that differ from later Victorian manufacture. Examining the construction joints and timber types helps clarify the period of origin alongside stylistic cues.

Are painted finishes on these pieces original?

Painted finishes on antique storage furniture vary between original period coatings and subsequent decorative layers applied over time. Evaluating the wear patterns and underlying timber preparation helps determine the history of the paint surface.
