What is a white glazed cabinet used for?

These cabinets serve to store and display books, ceramics, and decorative objects behind protective glass doors. They keep dust away while allowing visibility into the interior shelves. Historically, tall bookcases and vitrines housed private libraries or collections of porcelain, functioning both as practical storage and formal furniture.

How do I tell an 18th-century piece from a 19th-century one?

Dating relies on timber selection, construction methods, and stylistic cues such as Georgian proportions versus Victorian ornamentation. Iron or brass hardware and the type of glass can also offer clues. Earlier pieces often display hand-planed timbers and simpler internal structures, while later nineteenth-century examples may incorporate adjustable shelving systems.

Are painted wood cabinets original?

Many pieces feature painted finishes applied during their period of manufacture, particularly within Gustavian and English country styles. Paint was utilised to brighten rooms and protect the underlying timber. Distinguishing between original surface treatments and later overpainting involves examining the wear patterns and the interaction between the paint and the wood beneath.

Where were these cabinets made?

The pieces originate from various European and American workshops, including English, Scottish, Dutch, Swedish, and French makers. Each region developed distinct proportions and decorative vocabulary. For instance, Swedish and Gustavian pieces often favour lighter painted palettes, whereas English and American items frequently utilise regional hardwoods and distinct architectural cornices.
