What subjects appear in these paintings?

The works primarily depict rural landscapes, moorland views, and coastal scenes. Common subjects include local harbours, fishing boats, and village life. Artists focused heavily on regional geography, capturing the specific light and terrain of southwestern England.

How should I care for watercolour works?

Watercolour paintings require protection from direct sunlight to prevent the pigments and paper from fading. Framing under glass with acid-free mounts safeguards the paper surface from environmental damage. Keep these pieces in stable indoor humidity conditions to preserve the integrity of both the paper and the frame.

How are the dates of these works verified?

Dates are typically established through artist signatures, exhibition records, and stylistic analysis. Contemporary framing or period labels on the reverse also provide clues to the creation era. Comparing known works by the same artist helps confirm the chronological placement of unsigned pieces.

What distinguishes oil paintings from watercolours here?

Oil paintings utilise heavy pigments on canvas, offering rich textures and deep colour saturation. Watercolours use translucent washes on paper, creating lighter and more immediate atmospheric effects. Both mediums were employed to document the same regional landscapes but achieve distinctly different visual results.
