How do I date a wooden rocking horse?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, the style of the carving, and the materials used for the mane and tack. Iron and steel components or specific rocker shapes often provide clues to the period of manufacture. Comparing the piece to known examples from makers like F.H. Ayres or the Lines brothers helps narrow the decade. Original paint surfaces also offer strong indicators of age.

What is treen in antique toys?

Treen refers to small functional or decorative wooden objects made by hand, such as the antique child's rattles found in early collections. These items highlight the domestic woodwork skills of past centuries. They were carved from local hardwoods and finished simply, serving as everyday items for young children.

Are these toys safe for children today?

These pieces are historical artefacts and antiques rather than modern safety-tested toys. They often feature old iron components, fragile painted surfaces, and horsehair fillings that require careful handling. Most buyers choose to display them as decorative folk art objects within the home rather than permitting active play.

What does original paint mean?

Original paint indicates that the decorative surface coating applied when the toy was first made remains untouched by later restoration. This preserves the authentic look and historical integrity of the piece. Collectors heavily favour items that retain their early dappled or plain painted finishes over those with modern overpainting.
