What is a vintage vanity table mirror?

A tabletop accessory designed for grooming, featuring a glass plate held within a wooden, metal, or silver frame that tilts on pivots. These pieces range from simple 19th-century mahogany swing mirrors to elaborate Art Deco triple-plate designs with integrated drawers.

How do I date a mirror frame?

Dating relies on timber choices, construction techniques, and stylistic markers such as Georgian proportions, Victorian carving, or 1930s geometric lines. Secondary wood types, backboards, and fastener styles further clarify the period of manufacture.

How were these mirrors used?

They were placed on dressing chests, washstands, and tables to provide a clear reflection for adjusting hair and applying cosmetics. Many incorporated small boxes or drawers at the base for storing jewellery, pins, and personal items.

Can I replace the glass plate?

While original silvered glass shows desirable historic ageing, plates can be replaced if damaged by professionals using traditional bevelling techniques. Retaining the original glass preserves the historic character and authenticity of the piece.

How do I style one at home?

Place the mirror on top of a chest of drawers, sideboard, or dedicated dressing table to bounce light around a room. Pair wooden frames with complementary vintage tabletop accessories like silver trays and ceramic brush sets.
