How do I identify a Victorian Chesterfield sofa?

Victorian Chesterfield sofas are typically characterised by deep button tufting across the backrest, low seats, and scrolled arms of equal height to the back. They often feature robust timber frames supported by turned wooden legs or castors. Inspect the underside and internal webbing where accessible to check for period construction methods. The use of traditional stuffing materials and heavy horsehair padding further indicates nineteenth-century origin.

What distinguishes an Edwardian settee from a Victorian one?

Edwardian settees generally exhibit lighter proportions, simpler lines, and less heavy ornamentation than their Victorian predecessors. They frequently incorporate satinwood inlay, tapered legs, or Edwardian country house styling. While Victorian pieces lean towards imposing presence and deep buttoning, Edwardian furniture often prioritises relaxed comfort with loose cushions and floral or plain fabric upholstery.

Can I use a vintage drop arm sofa as a daybed?

Drop arm sofas are specifically designed with mechanical hinges that allow one or both arms to lower completely flat. This feature converts the seating piece into an impromptu daybed or chaise longue for resting. When operating the mechanism on older frames, handle the moving parts with care to preserve the original nineteenth-century or Edwardian timber and metal components.

What is calico upholstery on an antique sofa?

Calico is a sturdy cotton fabric used as an interim layer of upholstery beneath the decorative outer textile. Many antique sofas are sold in calico linen to allow buyers to select their own final top fabric. Finding a piece upholstered in calico often simplifies the process of reupholstery, as the foundational webbing, springs, and inner stuffing have already been professionally restored.
