How do I clean leather on a vintage armchair?

Wipe surfaces gently with a damp cloth and apply a neutral leather conditioner to maintain suppleness. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the original finish. Test any conditioning product on a hidden area first to ensure it does not darken the leather or alter the vintage patina.

What is a bergere chair?

A bergère is an upholstered armchair featuring enclosed sides, traditionally constructed with cane panelling or padded fabric. They offer a comfortable, deep seat suited for formal reception rooms. Most examples date from the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries, incorporating mahogany or walnut frames.

Are these chairs suitable for daily use?

Most solid wood frames with sound internal webbing handle everyday sitting comfortably. Check that the joints remain tight and the padding supports weight evenly before regular use. Lighter salon or occasional chairs suit reading corners better than heavy daily lounging.

How do I date a padded armchair?

Examine the timber species, carving style, and upholstery construction methods visible beneath the chair. Victorian and Edwardian pieces often display distinct revival motifs or machine-assisted joinery. Comparing the turned legs and stretcher bars against known period examples helps narrow down the decade of manufacture.
