What mattress size fits these beds?

Many vintage French frames conform to historical dimensions that differ slightly from modern standard sizing. Buyers often need custom mattresses or minor adjustments to slats to accommodate contemporary widths and lengths. Checking exact internal dimensions listed for each bedstead ensures proper fit before purchasing a mattress.

How do I distinguish Louis XV from Louis XVI style?

Louis XV pieces lean towards asymmetrical curves, cabriole legs, and elaborate Rococo shell or floral carvings. The overall aesthetic feels flowing and organic. Louis XVI furniture introduces neoclassical straight lines, geometric symmetry, fluted columns, and ribbon or leaf motifs derived from classical antiquity.

Are these beds easy to assemble?

Most antique French beds utilise traditional iron bolts and side-rail slots that slot together without complex hardware. Reassembling them typically requires basic spanners and two people to handle heavy timber headboards and footboards. Care must be taken to keep the frame square and level during setup to prevent straining antique joints.

How should I care for painted wood finishes?

Painted and gilt surfaces benefit from regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent abrasive particle buildup. Avoid modern chemical sprays or abrasive cleaners that can damage delicate nineteenth-century paintwork or gold leaf. Maintaining stable room humidity protects the underlying timber from expanding or contracting beneath the painted finish.
