What is a khamseh carpet?

A khamseh carpet is a tribal textile woven by the confederated tribes of south-west Persia. These pieces are celebrated for their bold geometric designs and rich use of symbolism. They reflect the nomadic heritage and artistic expressions of distinct sub-tribes, including the Basseri and Arab-Jabbareh. Each rug functions as a historical document of the weavers' environment and cultural identity.

How do I identify a khamseh rug?

Identification relies on recognising specific tribal motifs, colour palettes, and structural characteristics typical of south-west Persian weaving. Stylistic overlaps with Qashqai and Luri pieces often require careful examination of border patterns and field layouts. The use of hand-spun wool and traditional natural dye colours also helps distinguish genuine nineteenth and early twentieth-century examples from later reproductions. Sub-tribal variations offer further clues to a rug's specific origins within the confederation.

Where were these carpets made?

These carpets were produced in the south-west region of Persia by nomadic and settled tribal groups. The weavers moved across traditional territories, bringing regional aesthetics into their portable looms. Local access to specific plants for dyeing and sheep producing resilient wool shaped the distinct local characteristics of these tribal textiles. The landscape and daily nomadic life heavily influenced their visual vocabulary.

How do I care for an antique rug?

Protecting an antique tribal carpet involves minimising direct exposure to harsh sunlight and heavy foot traffic. Regular, gentle vacuuming without a rotating power brush helps remove abrasive dust from the wool pile. Professional cleaning should be undertaken sparingly and exclusively by specialists experienced in antique vegetable-dyed wool textiles. Using a quality underlay prevents slipping and cushions the foundation against hard flooring.
