How do I install vintage door furniture?

Most vintage door knockers and centre knobs utilise existing screw holes or require straightforward through-bolt fixings that align with standard door thicknesses. Care must be taken to match the metal type of the screws to avoid damaging the surrounding hardware. For letter boxes and pull handles, ensure the backplate sits flush against the timber surface to prevent moisture ingress. Professional fitting is recommended if drilling into original period doors.

Can I use brass hardware outside?

Solid brass and bronze are naturally weather-resistant metals well suited for exterior environments. They develop a gradual patina over time when exposed to the elements. Regular light cleaning maintains the surface without stripping away the historical character that collectors value.

How do I date a brass door knocker?

Dating relies on stylistic cues, such as the ornate figural work common in Victorian pieces versus the geometric restraint of Georgian designs. Heavier castings and specific mounting plate shapes often align with nineteenth-century manufacturing methods. Comparing the patina and fixing style helps narrow down whether a piece originates from the Victorian, Edwardian or Regency eras.

What is the difference between a pull and a knob?

A centre door knob is a round or faceted grip mounted centrally on the exterior to pull the door shut. A door pull is typically a vertical or horizontal handle designed for the same pulling function but in a different physical configuration. Both items work alongside separate latch mechanisms rather than turning to open the door.
