How do I date a vintage framed picture?

Dating relies on examining the materials of both the artwork and the frame, along with any signatures, inscriptions, or labels on the reverse. Paper ageing, canvas types, and joinery methods in the wooden frame all offer clear chronological clues. Style also provides reliable guidance, as Victorian, Edwardian, and mid-century aesthetics each employ distinct palettes and framing profiles that reflect their original eras of production.

Are these pictures supplied ready to hang?

Most pieces arrive with their historical frames intact, often fitted with original cords or rings attached to the reverse. This makes them immediately suitable for wall mounting upon arrival. Buyers should inspect the hanging hardware on older items to ensure it remains secure and appropriate for the weight of the frame and glass.

How should I care for a vintage framed picture?

Protection from direct sunlight is essential to prevent the fading of watercolours, prints, and pastel drawings behind glass. Maintaining stable room humidity also protects wooden frames and canvas supports from warping. Cleaning should be limited to gentle dusting of the frame with a dry cloth, avoiding moisture or chemical sprays near the exposed surfaces of the artwork.

Can I replace the glass on an antique frame?

Original glass, particularly in nineteenth-century and older pieces, often exhibits charming surface ripples and tiny bubbles that modern glass lacks. Preserving this original glazing is generally recommended to maintain the historical integrity of the piece. Replacement should only be considered if the glass is cracked or poses a structural hazard to the drawing or painting within.
