How do I hang a heavy framed oil portrait safely?

Secure your painting using appropriate wall anchors and picture wire rated for the weight of the wood and gesso frame. Ensure the fixings anchor directly into wall studs where possible. Check that the hanging hardware screwed into the wooden frame remains sturdy before mounting the artwork at eye level.

What is the difference between canvas and board supports?

Canvas consists of woven fabric stretched tightly over a wooden stretcher frame, offering slight give under the touch. Board provides a rigid, solid panel surface favoured for smaller or quicker studies. Both materials support oil paint effectively, though board pieces often present a flatter profile within their frames.

How do I clean a vintage oil painting surface?

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry artist brush to remove loose particles without disturbing the paint layer. Avoid using water, household cleaners or chemical solvents on historic oils. Professional conservators should handle any deeper cleaning or removal of discoloured varnish to protect the integrity of the pigment.

Can I replace the frame on an antique portrait?

Replacing a frame is possible, but period frames often contribute historical context and aesthetic balance to the artwork. Original gesso and gilt surrounds complement the era in which the portrait was painted. If a frame is structurally compromised, consult a professional framer to source a period-appropriate alternative that protects the canvas.
