How can I adapt these doors for a modern closet?

Joiners can trim solid wood frames or mount existing panels onto new timber carcases to fit contemporary bedroom openings. Hardware adjustments allow older hinges to integrate with modern hanging systems. Measuring the exact rebate depth ensures the panels sit flush against contemporary walls while retaining their original exterior character.

What woods were used for these doors?

Cabinet makers predominantly selected mahogany, oak, and walnut for structural stability and rich natural colour. Lighter decorative timbers like satinwood and maple appear in inlaid details. Figure variations such as burr walnut and flame mahogany provide distinct visual textures across the panel surfaces.

How do I distinguish Edwardian doors from Art Deco ones?

Edwardian panels often feature inlaid stringing, mahogany frames, and traditional cornices reflecting revival styles. They lean towards classic symmetry and formal proportions. Art Deco doors from around 1930 showcase streamlined geometric shapes, curved bow front designs, and dramatic veneer matching without traditional ornamentation.

Can I paint these timber doors?

Many historical pieces were produced in wax finishes or polished wood, but some examples from the listings historically welcomed paint treatments. Applying modern finishes requires proper preparation of the underlying timber grain. Retaining the original polished walnut or mahogany surface preserves the natural grain character built by past cabinet makers.
