What is a door porter?

A door porter is simply another nineteenth-century term for a heavy doorstop. These pieces often feature an integrated loop handle at the top for carrying. Households used them interchangeably with standard doorstops to manage heavy interior doors.

How heavy are these doorstops?

These pieces possess substantial heft derived from solid iron construction. Their weight allows them to hold open heavy timber doors against strong household drafts. Buyers should ensure the floor surface can support frequent placement of heavy metal objects.

How do I date a cast iron doorstop?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, fastener types, and the character of the iron casting. Victorian pieces often depict popular historical figures, heraldic animals, or theatrical characters. Wear patterns and the presence of early layered paint finishes also help indicate age.

Where should I place a doorstop?

These pieces sit on hallway floors or inside reception rooms to keep interior doors positioned securely. Their decorative figurative designs mean they function as sculptural ornaments when not actively holding doors. Keep them away from damp areas to protect the iron and painted surfaces.
