What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a piece of furniture constructed in multiple sections with recessed hardware so it could travel easily with military officers. These chests are built to be stacked and secured tightly for long journeys across land and sea.

Why use camphor wood?

Camphor wood was selected for travel trunks because its natural aroma repels moths and other pests. This kept uniforms and woollens safe during colonial postings. The timber is also resistant to damp conditions found in tropical environments.

How do I date a chest?

Dating relies on the style of the brass hardware, the construction joints, and the primary timber used. Nineteenth-century examples often display hand-cut dovetails and heavy brass binding. Later Victorian and Edwardian pieces may show machine-sawn elements or different interior layouts.

Are these chests heavy?

These pieces are built from dense hardwoods like teak and mahogany, making them substantial items. Many were designed to separate into two distinct sections for easier lifting. The heavy brass corners add further weight to the overall structure.
