What is a column lamp?

A column lamp is a vertical lighting fixture designed to resemble a classical architectural pillar, usually featuring a detailed capital and a stepped base. These pieces frequently adapt nineteenth-century oil lamp standards or heavy metal candlesticks into electrified table and floor lamps.

How do I identify a Victorian lamp?

Victorian lamps typically display heavy cast brass construction, classical column orders, and components associated with period oil burning mechanisms. Look for marked duplex burners, heavy metal bases, and hand-etched glass shades that date from the nineteenth century.

Were these lamps converted from oil?

Many tall brass column lamps originated as nineteenth-century oil lamps before being rewired for electricity in later decades. Original burners, galleries, and oil reservoirs are frequently retained at the top of the column beneath the bulb holder and shade.

What glass shades go with these?

These lamps often feature opaline glass, cranberry glass, or clear glass shades with etched tulip or winter scene patterns. The glass sits within a brass gallery above the column, diffusing the light downward.
