What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a portable set of drawers made in two or more separate stacking sections with flush folding handles. These pieces were designed to be packed into canvas covers and transported during military postings. The sturdy construction utilised dense teak and brass reinforcement corners to protect the wood during rough journeys across colonies.

How do I identify Hoshiarpur tables?

Hoshiarpur tables are recognised by their dense all-over carving of foliage and animal motifs combined with intricate brass wire or bone inlay. They often feature folding octagonal or square tops. The work originated from northern India during the late nineteenth century and was exported widely to British homes.

Is teak furniture durable?

Teak is an extremely durable hardwood containing natural oils that repel moisture and prevent warping in varying climates. This made the timber ideal for colonial service and long ocean voyages. Routine maintenance requires only occasional waxing to preserve the natural lustre of the grain.

What periods do these pieces date from?

Most items date from the Victorian era across the nineteenth century, running from the eighteen-fifties through to nineteen-twenty. Styles shifted from plain utilitarian military pieces to elaborate colonial revival carvings. Specific dates are often deduced from the complexity of the brass hardware and regional carving styles.
