What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a small enclosed bedside cabinet designed in the nineteenth century to conceal a chamber pot. These practical items now function well as standard nightstands for bedside storage. They typically feature a single door opening to a shelf inside, keeping domestic items out of sight while offering a flat surface on top for a lamp.

Are these nightstands made of solid pine?

The listings show pieces constructed from pine, pitch pine, and Oregon pine. These are solid wood builds rather than modern laminates. Craftsmen selected these softwoods for their abundance and workability during the Victorian era, often finishing the timber with paint, wax, or graining.

What is faux bamboo furniture?

Faux bamboo refers to wooden furniture turned on a lathe to imitate the jointed stalks of natural bamboo. This exotic style became popular during the Victorian period. Cabinets featuring this decoration combine the sturdy utility of pine with playful, imitation cane turnings on the legs and corners.

Did Victorian nightstands have marble tops?

Certain Victorian bedside cabinets and washstands feature inset marble tops. This provided a durable, wipe-clean surface resistant to water from jugs and basins. These marble-topped versions offer a heavier, more substantial presence beside a bed compared to all-wood constructions.
