What is a tramp art box?

Tramp art involves layering notched chips of wood removed from discarded cigar boxes and packing crates to create textured geometric patterns. These items emerged across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Makers relied on simple pocket knives rather than specialised workshop tools, resulting in distinctive stepped profiles and varied surface relief.

How were treen snuff shoes used?

Snuff shoes served as portable containers for dry tobacco powder carried in pockets or waistcoats during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Their distinctive footwear shape carried symbolic or sentimental meanings for the owner. Sliding lids provided access to the compartment while keeping the contents secure against moisture during daily travel.

What materials decorate maritime dioramas?

Maritime dioramas incorporate cork, painted card, textiles, feathers, and natural shells to construct three-dimensional coastal and ocean scenes. Makers often utilised actual shipping wreckage or locally gathered materials. These elements create depth within glazed wooden shadow boxes, capturing detailed rigging and waves.

How do I care for painted folk art boxes?

Painted wooden boxes require stable indoor humidity away from direct sunlight to prevent paint flaking and timber shrinkage. Dusting should be done gently with a dry, soft cloth without applying liquid polishes. Preserving the original surface skin ensures the historical integrity and natural patina remain undisturbed.
